Can you really get all of it?

Yes, with the right tools and patience. Hair that a normal vacuum leaves behind comes out with specialty tools that lift it from the carpet fibers rather than brushing over it.

Does it help with allergies and smells?

It helps a lot, because dander and odor ride on the hair and in the carpet it is trapped in. Pairing it with a full interior detail or shampoo and extraction is the complete fix.
