Here is a test I show customers all the time. Wash and dry your car, then put your hand inside a plastic sandwich bag and run your fingertips lightly across the hood or the roof. The thin plastic amplifies texture your bare skin misses. On most cars around here, paint that looked perfectly clean suddenly feels like fine sandpaper. That grit is not dirt you missed. It is contamination that has physically bonded to the clear coat, and no soap, pressure washer, or towel is going to remove it.
Bonded contamination matters for more than feel. Those embedded particles create thousands of tiny anchor points that hold onto dust and water, so the car gets dirty faster and dries with more spotting. They also block wax and sealant from bonding directly to the paint, which is why protection applied over contaminated paint never lasts the way it should. Until the surface is actually clean at that level, everything else you do to the exterior is working at a disadvantage.
Detailing clay is an engineered resin bar that glides across lubricated paint and shears off anything sticking up above the surface. It grabs the particles a wash mitt slides right over: overspray, industrial fallout, tar specks, sap residue, and tiny fragments of hot brake dust that landed on the paint and stuck. As the bar loads up with contamination, I fold it to expose a fresh face and keep working. When a panel is done, the baggie test comes back smooth as glass.
Crescenta Valley cars collect a particular mix. Commuters on the 210 and the 2 pick up brake and rail dust that embeds as rust-colored pinpricks, especially visible on white cars. Fire season leaves ash that bonds to paint once morning dew wets it. Spring dumps pollen. Sprinkler overspray dries into mineral deposits on lower panels and glass. Park under the oaks or pines near a trailhead and sap joins the list. Individually these are small problems. Together, they are why paint here loses its slickness so quickly.
Claying only happens on a freshly washed car, because dragging clay over loose dirt would scratch the paint. Once the car is clean, I work panel by panel with plenty of clay lubricant, keeping the bar moving in straight lines with light pressure. I check progress constantly with the baggie test and fold the clay often. Glass gets clayed too, which makes a surprising difference in how the wipers behave and how the windshield sheds water on a rainy drive down the 2.
Clay pulls off contamination, but it does not fix defects that are in the paint itself. Once a car is decontaminated, swirl marks, water spot etching, and oxidation actually become easier to see, because the surface is honest again. I will point out anything I find and tell you whether it calls for machine polishing or whether it is minor enough to live with. Either way, clean paint is the starting point, which brings us to protection.
Freshly clayed paint is completely bare, and bare paint in this sun does not stay nice for long. So clay and protection always travel together in my process. On clean paint, wax and sealants bond tightly and evenly, which means better durability, better beading, and that deep wet gloss people notice from across the street. This is also where the famous after feel comes from. Slick, protected paint is genuinely hard to stop touching, and customers always run a hand down the fender before I leave.
For most customers here I lean toward a quality synthetic sealant rather than a traditional carnauba wax. Carnauba has a warm look but gives up quickly in strong UV and summer heat. A modern sealant lasts noticeably longer, stands up better to sprinkler water and ash, and keeps that just-detailed slickness through more wash cycles. On a garage-kept weekend car, a carnauba topper is a nice indulgence. On a daily driver parked outside in La Crescenta, the sealant earns its keep. For a daily driver parked outside, claying is usually needed once or twice a year, with protection refreshed more often than that. Garage-kept cars stretch longer. The baggie test is your guide: if the paint feels gritty through the plastic after a normal wash, it is time. I would also move the schedule up after a heavy ash event or a season of hard sprinkler exposure, since both leave deposits you want off the paint sooner rather than later.
